Is PowerPoint Right For You?

Want to know if PowerPoint is right for your church?

Good question - and one that many churches are asking.

Every church is different.

Every congregation is different.

And let's face it - every church's budget is drastically different!

You've probably heard all the arguments against using PowerPoint:

    • It costs too much
    • We don't have the technical knowledge
    • We don't have anybody to run it
    • We don't have a place to put the projector
    • We don't have a place to put a screen
    • We don't have anybody to build the slides?
    • It's inappropriate It's distracting
    • We're not big enough
    • We don't need it

Have I missed any? Let's face it, some people just don't like change! Having spent years in small churches with little or no budget, I have good news. PowerPoint doesn't cost much and can be a great asset to all churches (even those who worship in schools, gyms, etc.).

What are the Benefits?

You might be asking, "How can PowerPoint help my church?"

Glad you asked! Here are just some of the benefits:

    • Saves Time
By using templates, you don't have to keep recreating many parts of the service each week.
    • Saves Money
Not having include the liturgy, prayers, and song lyrics in the bulletin can save a lot of money on printing and photocopying costs.

    • Helps the Hearing Impaired
Many people are embarrassed by their hearing difficulties and will not use hearing aids. Reading helps them overcome these challenges and restores their dignity.

    • Helps the Visually Impaired
Same argument also works for those with reading difficulties. Often times people forget their reading glasses and feel embarrassed and awkward. The large text on the big screen overcomes this challenge.

    • Helps Moms and Dads
Many moms and dads find it challenging to read the bulletin while holding small kids. Having it all on the big screen allows them to hold their kids while following the service on the big screen.

    • Highlights Key Sermon Points
Lets face it - many people nod off during the sermon. PowerPoint can engage the congregation by highlighting key points and helping them take notes.
    • Communicates Announcements
How many times have people said they didn't know about an event? Running announcements on a loop can help get the word out about those important events or ask for volunteers.

    • Challenges & Encourages Others
You can share scripture or other messages to challenge or encourage people.

    • Makes Visitors More Comfortable
Many visitors are uncomfortable in new surroundings (especially if they're alone). Reading announcements, scripture and other messages before worship often helps them feel more comfortable. This can also help learn more about your church (activities, mission statement, beliefs, etc.).
    • Gets Others Involved
Worship should be more than a spectator event. Let others share in the ministry by building slides, setting up equipment, and running the presentations.

Wow! That's a lot of benefits! There are probably more that aren't even listed. Best of all, PowerPoint can be used in other ways besides worship. It can be used in Sunday School classes, meetings, and other church events.

Your whole church can benefit from using PowerPoint!

    Are there any Negatives?

Nope. Not if it's done right.

However, there are two things that can be viewed negatively if used improperly.

Too many graphics and transitions can be distracting. But proper use can be taught, so this negative goes away.
